About us
Why is it called 'Martial Arts'?
While many of the movements may have been designed to teach people how to fight, and can be applied in self-defense situations, they have grown beyond just a practical exercise. Through martial arts, people learn how to work with their body. From the very basic movements to the most advanced techniques, mind and body learn how to work together. As you add tools to your self-defense toolbox, your skills grow. You begin feeling how to best flow between strikes and blocks, moving with intensity. This is where the 'art' comes in. There is beauty in the harmony of mind, body and even soul that expresses itself as a masterpiece of movement.
What do we teach?
We teach a style called Kempo Karate, and it's a style that's constantly evolving. It started when Chinese martial arts were brought to Japan hundreds of years ago, making it a fusion of multiple styles.
Our modern version has continued growing to include elements of several different martial arts. We cover skills and strategies for dealing with situations from a distance, close up, standing or on the ground in order to provide well-rounded self-defense training.
Our style includes
elements of
- Karate
- Kung Fu
- Jiu Jitsu
- Boxing
Why 'Strike and Flow'?
The terms hard and soft in martial arts refer to how you move when executing a technique.
You will often be hard when you are striking and blocking, stopping your opponent’s force and answering with your own.
You become soft when you don’t meet the force of your opponent, but flow with them instead. This is done when dodging strikes, moving around for a better angle and using an opponents momentum against them.
In life, just like with martial arts, there are times we need to stand strong and not compromise. There other times that we need to be creative and find a better solution to a problem. As students learn when to be firm (strike) and when to find other solutions (flow), they will begin to see the value of balance in their lives.
